- A tone-deaf, uneven and maddeningly dumb clunker that never settles on an identity, all the way to the closing credits.
- New York Magazine/Vulture10/5/2018 by David EdelsteinIt's hard to mess up a car chase up and down the streets of San Francisco and Fleischer certainly doesn't, though at these speeds we should be gasping and laughing instead of just nodding our heads.
- The Venom symbiote requires a perfect match to bond with its host; otherwise, the host is doomed. The Venom movie plays like a midnight horror that has invaded a superhero movie, and while there are some laffs to be had, it's far from a perfect match.
- Certainly I'm in a minority when it comes to my fellow critics, but I liked 'Venom.' Hell, if it wasn't for the sloppy and formulaic script, I might have even loved it.
- It turns out Venom isn't much different than the alien who starred in NBC's 1980s sitcom ALF: A pushy boor motivated mostly by his next snack.
- 'Venom' could become Marvel's version of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' or 'Santa Claus Conquers the Martians' -- a camp classic worth mocking again and again.
- The chief problem with 'Venom' is that it never settles on a tone. Is it comedy? Horror? Romance? Drama? Why not try all of them at once?
- A horribly scripted film so bad as to be enjoyable, but not bad enough to be good.
- On the Marvel scale of greatness, with 1 being the least pleasing and 10 the most amazing, Venom might be around a 3.5, a 4 if you're in a really good mood.
- Part of the reason the superhero genre has managed to elevate itself is it gives us characters that we root for and care about. Venom does none of this.
- At some future gala event where Tom Hardy is being feted for his incredible acting career, the clip from Venom will be the one that gets the audience laughing.
- Minneapolis Star Tribune10/4/2018 by Colin CovertAims to be a brash, breezy and breathlessly paced new origin story, but largely misses those targets.
- It's just not an especially good superhero movie and it wastes an intriguing premise.
- It's an incoherent mess of tones, acting styles and visual effects. And yet it's kind of a hoot.
- A picture in the running for the dubious distinction of being perhaps the worst Marvel-derived origin story ever. And that includes the odious 2015 'Fantastic Four.'
- San Francisco Chronicle10/4/2018 by Mick LaSalleThere's nothing memorable in 'Venom,' nothing to talk about the next day. But if it happens to hit you right, its lightness is refreshing.
- The ingratiating eccentricities of 'Venom' aren't enough to really distinguish the movie from its superhero-movie brethren as it devolves into the usual expensive orgy of sound, fury and wisecracking.
- More monster movie than a superhero one, Sony's attempt to expand its Spider-Man franchise with this solo vehicle for one of his more colorful villains makes a mess of the tone, staggering from horror-tinged nastiness to split-personality comedy.
- A tonally wonky lark that's actually stronger when it's sillier. It's a mess, but a fun mess-at least for a while.
- At the very least, Venom feels as if Fleischer was shooting two radically different movies at once, and even in the final edit it's not clear which he chose.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2,477) IMDb 7.5 133 min 2017 PG-13 Subtitles and Closed Captions X-Ray Spider-Man Tom Holland begins to navigate his new identity as the web-slinging super hero under the watchful eye of his mentor Tony Stark.
